AmorLink vs Character.AI: The Filter Is the Whole Difference

One of these apps is open to teenagers. Everything else follows from that, in both directions.

We make AmorLink, so read this with the other tab open. It also means we are not going to pretend this is a close contest on most axes, because it isn't — Character.AI is enormous, free, and better than us at the thing it is for. The comparison exists because of one structural difference, and if that difference doesn't matter to you, you should stay where you are.

The one question that decides it

Are you an adult who wants romantic or adult content?

If no: use Character.AI. Genuinely. It is free, the character library is the largest in existence, and for open-ended roleplay, worldbuilding, writing practice, language practice or talking to a fictional detective about a case, it is excellent and we are not trying to replace it.

If yes: that is what AmorLink is built for, and the rest of this post is about what changes.

Why the filter exists

Character.AI is open to under-18s. Once minors are on a platform, filtering sexual content is not a product decision anyone gets to reconsider — it is the only defensible way to run it. Every complaint you have read about the filter is really a complaint about serving two audiences with one policy, and the policy correctly favours the vulnerable one.

AmorLink took the opposite side of that trade. It is adults only, age is attested at the door before the first conversation, and adult content is available to adults who opt in. That is not a better decision than theirs — it is a decision that only works becausewe don't let minors in. Different audience, different rules.

Where Character.AI wins, plainly

The library. Millions of user-made characters, including every fictional figure you can think of. Our catalogue is curated and small by comparison.

Price. The free tier is genuinely generous. Ours is usable — free messages daily, no card — but theirs is the more generous product for someone who never intends to pay.

Group rooms. They have multi-character rooms too, and have had them longer. Ours are capped at two companions in a conversation; if many-character scene-setting is what you want, they are ahead.

Voice. They offer voice calls. AmorLink plays her written message aloud in a chosen voice — text-to-speech, not a live call. We should not blur that distinction: on voice, we are behind.

What AmorLink adds for an adult

She has a face, and it stays the same

This is the difference people underestimate. Character.AI is text — it does not generate pictures of your character. On AmorLink every companion has a consistent appearance, and you can generate new images of her in different outfits, settings and moods that still look like her. You can also animate a picture into a short clip.

If you have spent months talking to a character you have never seen, seeing her is a bigger change than an extra feature row suggests.

Conversations that don't stop at a wall

The practical experience of the filter is a scene building and then a reply that steps out of character to decline. On AmorLink, for a verified adult who has opted in, that wall isn't there. There are still hard limits — content involving minors is refused outright, by keyword and by classifier, and no setting turns that off — but the boundary is a legal one rather than a tonal one.

Memory that is actually persistent

Both products remember things; ours is built as the centre of the feature rather than a context window. Conversations get summarised as they grow, and facts worth keeping are stored separately from the recent messages, so something you mentioned weeks ago can resurface without the whole history being re-read every turn.

Which should you pick?

Character.AI if you are under 18 — this is not a preference, it is the only correct answer — or if you want free, all-ages, unlimited-variety roleplay. It is a better product for that and it is not close.

AmorLink if you are an adult and the filter is the reason you are searching, or if you want to see the companion you talk to.
