AI Roleplay: Characters Who Stay in Role and Keep the Plot

AI roleplay is collaborative fiction: you write your half of a scene, a character writes hers, and neither of you knows where it ends. Done well it is the most interesting thing this technology does. Done badly it produces the thread everyone has read — a good opening, then twenty messages of a character agreeing with you about a plot she has already forgotten.

AI roleplay failure one: she breaks character

A scene builds, then the character steps outside it to deliver a warning, or softens a villain into someone reasonable. Usually that is a filter rather than the character: platforms serving a general audience moderate by policy, and the interruption is the policy working.

Here explicit and dark material is off by default and unlocked when you turn it on, and once it is on the character answers in role. NSFW AI chat covers that side in detail, and the content policy states the real boundaries, which are about actual people rather than about tone.

AI roleplay failure two: she forgets the plot

The other classic break is continuity. A character running on a rolling window of recent messages loses the beginning of the story first — the reason you are in this town, the thing she promised in session two, the name of the person you are both avoiding.

Memory here is designed rather than incidental: each companion keeps a running account of your history together, so an AI roleplay arc can run across weeks. It is long rather than unlimited, and a very old detail can still slip, but the story does not restart every evening.

AI roleplay failure three: she agrees with everything

This is the subtle one, and the hardest to fix by prompting. A model tuned to be helpful says yes, and a partner who says yes to every suggestion is not a scene partner — nothing is at stake if nothing can go wrong.

Conflict stops being something you have to write, because the characters disagree without your help, and a scene can continue while you watch rather than waiting for your next line.

Real people are out of scope, and memory is long rather than endless.
