Best Janitor AI Alternatives in 2026
Seven places to go when you want Janitor AI's freedom without its setup.
October 13, 2026 · 8 min read
I work on AmorLink AI, so that's the disclosure before anything else: I have a stake in where you land after reading this. Janitor AI earned its following honestly — a free, community-built character catalogue that dwarfs most paid apps. This list is for people who still want that kind of freedom but are tired of the parts around it: picking a model or finding an API key. I checked all seven apps below on September 17, 2026, reading each one's own site, docs and help pages. Rival prices carry the month I saw them; AmorLink's price is read live from its own plans. I don't link to the other apps — their names are enough to find them.
Why people look past Janitor AI
Everything here comes from Janitor AI's own site and help centre, dated, because it deserves the same standard I hold every app on this list to.
- The free tier's memory is short. Its free tier gives “unlimited chats with millions of bots” on standard models, per its own subscription FAQ, with a memory window of about 9,000 tokens. That's workable for a short scene and thin for a long-running one.
- The API-key habit runs deep. Janitor AI's own changelog introduced janitor+ Router specifically so paying users could reach outside models “without pasting in an external API key” — worded that way because pasting one in was, until recently, how you got there.
- It's text only. There is no image generation anywhere on the site. If you want a picture of the character you've been talking to, Janitor AI isn't where you get it.
- The app and the website don't match. Its own FAQ says the official mobile app disables NSFW content by default, unlike the website — so the same account can feel like two different products depending on where you open it.
I can't tell you whether Janitor AI is reliable day to day — it doesn't publish uptime or incident history, so I'm not going to guess at something it hasn't said itself. What I can compare is what each alternative states plainly about itself: setup, memory, images and cost.
1. AmorLink AI
Best for: Adults who want to build their own companion, without configuring a model or an API key first.
Strengths
- Nothing to set up: no API key, no model picker, no proxy — pick a companion or build one and start talking.
- She remembers what you tell her and carries it into the next conversation instead of resetting.
- Photos and short video clips that keep her face, plus group rooms with two companions (Premium and above).
- Build your own companion from a description; making her and her first portrait are both free.
- Pay with crypto or Telegram Stars, so nothing about it has to touch a card.
Weaknesses
- A curated catalogue, not millions of community-made bots — nowhere near Chub AI's or Janitor AI's own scale.
- Free messages are capped per day; her more intimate photos and some companions need a paid plan.
- Voice is her written reply played back aloud, not a live call.
- No card checkout as of September 2026 — crypto or Telegram Stars only.
Free: Free daily messages with no card; creating your own companion and her first portrait are free.
Price: free daily messages, 50 free Sparks at signup; paid plans from $9.99/mo
2. SpicyChat
Best for: Readers who want Janitor AI's scale of user-made characters with group scenes built in.
Strengths
- A huge, tag-filterable community character library.
- Group chats with 2 to 10 characters, working on the free tier.
- A paid Memory Manager and Semantic Memory 2.0 for pinning details you don't want lost.
Weaknesses
- In-chat pictures start at the $19.95/mo tier; hearing replies read aloud needs $29.95/mo.
- The free tier runs on a 4,096-token memory window with replies capped at 180 tokens, and shows ads.
- Prices rose for new subscribers on September 8, 2026.
Free: A free account with ads, a 4,096-token context window and replies capped at 180 tokens; group chats still work.
Price: from $5.95/mo, or $60/yr billed yearly (checked Sep 2026)
3. CrushOn AI
Best for: Readers who want a big community library with voice replies and don't mind paying for NSFW characters.
Strengths
- A large, ranked community library with creator pages.
- Voice replies and a custom voice slot, including on the free plan.
- Pinned memories and automatic conversation summaries.
Weaknesses
- Its own in-app copy says free accounts can't open NSFW-tagged characters at all — a subscription is required.
- Free-tier chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity.
- Six plan levels plus an add-on chat package make the real monthly cost hard to predict.
Free: Unlimited chat on free models plus 100 message credits a month for stronger ones; free accounts can't open NSFW characters without a subscription.
Price: from $4.90/mo billed yearly ($5.99 month to month) (checked Sep 2026)
4. Chub AI
Best for: Power users who want Janitor AI's uncensored community library and don't mind connecting their own AI model.
Strengths
- A vast, largely uncensored library of characters, lorebooks, presets and interactive "Stages," browsable without an account.
- Full chat-tree branching, so you can rewind a scene and try a different reply, similar to ChatGPT.
- Connects to several outside AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter, NovelAI) for readers who already have a preferred model.
Weaknesses
- Chatting needs an API connection set up first, in its own words — of its seven connection options, six are paid and the one free option means hosting or renting your own model server.
- Its own in-house model is a single $20/month subscription, and it's crypto-only: no card checkout at all.
- No page states an ongoing per-message cost for bring-your-own-key chatting; that depends entirely on the outside provider you pick.
Free: Browsing and searching the character library needs no account; chatting is free only if you host or rent your own model — otherwise it's a paid API key or the $20/month subscription.
Price: $20/month for its own model, Soji (crypto only) (checked Sep 2026)
5. Candy AI
Best for: People who want one polished subscription covering chat, images and video, with no setup at all.
Strengths
- A detailed character builder (ethnicity, body, personality, voice, hobbies).
- Voice messages, voice calls in beta, and images that can become short video clips.
- Pays by card, crypto, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Weaknesses
- The free account is 5 messages in total, one custom character and one image.
- 100 tokens a month cover images, video, voice and extra characters combined; heavy use means buying top-ups.
- Its own homepage says "over 100 characters" — a small library next to Janitor AI's or Chub AI's.
Free: 5 messages in total across all characters, one custom character and one image.
Price: from $3.99/mo billed yearly ($13.99 month to month) (checked Sep 2026)
6. Luvr AI
Best for: Readers who want a ready-made girlfriend catalogue with a plainly published price table.
Strengths
- A clear free-vs-Premium comparison table published on its own subscribe page, readable with no login.
- Custom character and scenario creation, plus a wide range of tags (Dominant, Submissive, BDSM, Fantasy and more).
- AI chat, image generation and voice calls bundled into one Premium plan.
Weaknesses
- Free is 10 messages a day on a limited roster; no images, NSFW content, voice, video or custom characters, per its own comparison table.
- The advertised $5.99–$8.99/mo rates require paying for a 6- or 12-month term upfront, off a $19.99/mo list price.
- No accepted-payment-method list is shown outside the actual checkout flow.
Free: 10 messages a day on a limited character roster; no images, NSFW content, voice, video or custom characters.
Price: from $5.99/mo billed for 12 months ($19.99 month to month) (checked Sep 2026)
7. RomanticAI
Best for: Readers who want a wide roster of niche tags and a real welcome bonus before paying anything.
Strengths
- New accounts get a 120-Heart welcome bonus to spend on messages or photos before paying, per its own in-app reward.
- A wide tag catalogue across women, men and anime characters, plus native iOS and Android apps.
- Weekly, monthly, yearly or one-time Lifetime plans, with exact prices readable straight from its own pricing data.
Weaknesses
- Its explicit "sex mode" sits behind a separate, pricier Premium PLUS tier on top of base Premium, per its own plan names.
- Hearts drain fast: 15 Hearts for one photo against a 120-Heart welcome grant is only a handful of pictures.
- Only card payments were found in its pricing data; no crypto option.
Free: A 120-Heart welcome bonus (1 Heart per message, 15 Hearts per photo); Premium is needed for unlimited messages and unblurred replies.
Price: from $44.99/yr, or $14.99/mo month to month, or $6.99/week (checked Sep 2026)
No setup, no API keys on AmorLink AI
This is the one comparison I can make cleanly, because it's about what AmorLink AI itself does: there is nothing to configure. You don't choose a language model, paste in a key, or connect a proxy. Open a companion's profile or build one from a description, and the conversation starts. That's the opposite end of the spectrum from Chub AI, where its own docs call setting up an API connection “a necessary step before you can chat with a character,” and six of its seven connection options cost money on top of that.

That includes the anime side of the catalogue, not just realistic companions. Browse the anime category to see the current lineup; it's filtered and opened the same way as everything else on the site.
Group scenes
Janitor AI and several apps on this list handle one character at a time. AmorLink AI's group rooms put two companions and you in the same scene, reacting to each other as well as to you — available on Premium and above, not the free tier.

I wrote a longer, more technical piece on how that actually works under the hood — turn-taking in AI group chat— if you're curious why two AI characters don't just talk over each other.
How to start on AmorLink AI
Two ways in, neither needing a card, and both starting with confirming you're 18 or older.
Pick a companion someone else built. Explore AmorLink AI's companions by category, age or trait. Open a profile, press Start chat, and she sends the first message — no setup screen in between.
Or build your own. Create your AI girlfriend from a short description of who she is: her look, her personality, her relationship to you, her voice. Making her and her first portrait are both free, and a free account keeps her and lets you keep talking.
Chatting draws on your free daily messages and never spends Sparks, the credits that pay for photos and video. Every plan is listed on the pricing page if you decide to go further.
Janitor AI alternatives: common questions
What is better than Janitor AI?
It depends what's bothering you about it. For scale without an API key, SpicyChat or CrushOn AI come close to Janitor AI's size while running everything in-house. For a companion who remembers you, has a consistent face across photos, and needs nothing configured first, that's what AmorLink AI is built around.
Is there a Janitor AI without an API key?
Yes, several. AmorLink AI, SpicyChat, CrushOn AI and Candy AI all run their own models, so there's no key to find or paste in. Chub AI is the exception on this list: most of its connection options are outside APIs you bring yourself, and its own docs call setting one up "a necessary step before you can chat."
Is there a free alternative to Janitor AI?
Yes, with real differences in what "free" covers. SpicyChat's free tier isn't capped by message count, but it runs on a short, 4,096-token memory window with replies capped at 180 tokens; CrushOn AI gives unlimited chat on free models plus 100 message credits a month for stronger ones, though free accounts can't open its NSFW characters without a subscription. Luvr AI gives 10 free messages a day, and RomanticAI hands new accounts a Hearts welcome bonus. AmorLink AI's free daily messages come with no card, and creating your own companion and her first portrait cost nothing.
Does Janitor AI still exist?
Yes — as of this check, janitorai.com and its subscription plans are live and answering normally. If a specific chat or bot feels broken, that's usually a single feature having a rough moment rather than the site being gone.
Why is Janitor AI not working?
I can't point to a specific cause on Janitor AI's own pages, since it doesn't publish uptime or incident history. In general, apps like this can slow down at peak hours, when a connected AI provider has trouble, or during maintenance. If it keeps happening, Janitor AI's own help centre is the source to check, not a guess from outside.
Is Janitor AI safe?
It's an 18+ platform with its own content rules, and by its own help article, prohibited content is removed regardless of how a chat is tagged. Its official mobile app disables NSFW content by default, unlike the website — worth knowing if you expect the same experience on both. Beyond what its own pages state, read its privacy policy directly before deciding what you're comfortable sharing.
Build her in a few minutes. Chatting is free, and there is no card to enter.
