Best Character AI Alternatives for Adults in 2026
Character.AI is excellent and all-ages by design. If you're an adult who wants fewer walls, these seven are where people go.
October 6, 2026 · Updated October 8, 2026 · 10 min read
I work on AmorLink AI, so start with the disclosure before anything else: I have a stake in where you land after reading this. I also wrote a whole page comparing AmorLink to Character.AI directly, point by point, if that's the specific question you came with. This post is broader — it's for anyone who has decided Character.AI itself isn't the right fit anymore and wants to see what adults actually move to.
Character.AI deserves the credit it gets. It has the largest character library that exists, it's free, and for open-ended roleplay, fandom characters or just talking to something that isn't a search box, it's excellent. Its own Safety Center is explicit that it serves under-18 users on purpose, with a separate, more conservative model and a smaller set of characters for them — that's a real design decision, not an oversight, and it's the reason the filter exists in the first place. The apps below exist because an adult who wants a different trade is a different audience entirely.
Quick answer: the best Character AI alternatives
If you're an adult leaving Character.AI for fewer limits and a companion who remembers you, I'd start with AmorLink AI — I work on it, so weigh that. If what you'll miss is Character.AI's scale, these are the better picks:
- Best for memory and pictures: AmorLink AI — adults-only, she keeps what you tell her, and photos and video keep her face.
- Biggest library: SpicyChat — over 100,000 community characters under one tag, and group chats on the free tier.
- Best free replacement: Janitor AI — unlimited chats with millions of bots and no card, but text only.
- Best on mobile: Chai — a huge, voiced character library, but iOS and Android only.
- Best free trial with no card: Xchar AI — 150 free credits at signup, then a simple credit plan.
Character AI alternatives at a glance
All seven on one screen. Each cell is a short version of what that app's card below says, and each rival price is what its own site (or, for Chai, its App Store listing) showed on the date given.
| App | Free plan | Pictures | Voice | Memory | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AmorLink AI | Daily messages, no card | Yes; first portrait free | Her reply read aloud | Kept across chats | from $9.99/mo |
| SpicyChat | Ads, short memory; group chats | $19.95/mo tier and up | $29.95/mo tier | 4,096 tokens on free | from $5.95/mo (Sep 2026) |
| Janitor AI | Unlimited chats, no card | None | No, text only | About 9,000 tokens on free | from $12.99/mo (Sep 2026) |
| CrushOn AI | Free models; NSFW needs a plan | None on its pricing page | Yes, on the free plan | Pinned memories, summaries | from $4.90/mo yearly (Sep 2026) |
| Chai | Free to chat in the app | Not stated | Every character voiced | Not stated | from $9.99 (App Store) (Sep 2026) |
| Xchar AI | 150 credits, no card | HD images on paid | Not stated | 6,000–18,000 tokens by plan | from $7.45/mo yearly (Sep 2026) |

How I compared them
I work on AmorLink, so it's the one app on this list I use every day and know from the inside — including the parts I'd still like to fix, which are on its card below. For every other app, I went through its own public pages on September 17, 2026: pricing, what the free plan actually includes, its content rules and its FAQ. Each card quotes what that app says about itself, and each price carries the month I read it.
In October 2026 I also used three of them myself — a paid month of Candy AI and the free tiers of CrushOn AI and Janitor AI. A card says so when a note comes from that use, and credits other users when it repeats what they report. Where an app I didn't use keeps a detail behind a login, I say so rather than guess, and apps that hide their pricing entirely were left off the list. I ranked on:
- How much an adult can actually do without hitting a filter or a paywall.
- Memory: whether she remembers you next week, and how big that memory is on each plan.
- Pictures: whether the app can show you who you're talking to.
- The free tier and the cheapest real way in.
What adults leave Character.AI for
Three things come up over and over, and it's worth being specific about each, because “I want it uncensored” hides three separate complaints.
The filter. Character.AI's own Teen Safety page says it plainly: under-18 users get a more conservative model — one designed to reduce the odds of sexual or suggestive content surfacing — and a narrower set of Characters, with filters removing anything tied to sensitive or mature topics. It's the correct call for an all-ages product; it's also the single biggest reason adults look elsewhere.
Memory. A companion who resets, summarizes badly, or forgets what you told her last week stops feeling like anyone in particular. This is where the apps below differ most from each other — some measure memory in raw tokens (how much recent text the model can see at once) and sell bigger windows as a paid upgrade; a couple keep it deliberately generous even for free users.
Images. Character.AI is text only — it doesn't advertise image generation on any plan. If you've talked to someone for months and never seen a consistent face, that gap is bigger than it sounds. Several of the alternatives below build image generation in directly.
1. AmorLink AI — best for memory and pictures
Best for: Adults who want a conversation without a teen-safety filter, with one companion who remembers them and can show you a picture of herself.
Strengths
- Adults-only from the first screen, so there's no teen-safety filter sitting between you and the conversation.
- She remembers what you tell her and carries it forward instead of resetting each session.
- Photos and short video clips of her, generated on request and kept in her likeness.
- Build your own companion from a description; making her and her first portrait are both free.
- Pay with crypto or Telegram Stars, so nothing about it has to touch a card.
Weaknesses
- The character catalogue is curated and small next to a platform with millions of user-made bots.
- Free messages are capped per day; her more intimate photos and some companions need a paid plan.
- Voice is her written reply played back aloud, not a live call.
- No card checkout as of September 2026 — crypto or Telegram Stars only, which is unfamiliar if you've never paid either way before.
Free: Free daily messages with no card; creating your own companion and her first portrait are free.
Price: free daily messages, 50 free Sparks at signup; paid plans from $9.99/mo
2. SpicyChat — best for a library as big as Character.AI's
Best for: Readers who want Character.AI's scale of user-made characters with group scenes and fewer content limits.
Strengths
- An enormous, tag-filterable community library — over 100,000 characters under the "Female" tag alone.
- Group chats with 2 to 10 characters, working on the free tier.
- A paid Memory Manager and Semantic Memory 2.0 for pinning details you don't want lost.
- Unlimited character creation on every plan.
Weaknesses
- In-chat pictures start at the $19.95/mo tier, and hearing replies read aloud needs the $29.95/mo tier.
- The free tier runs on a short, 4,096-token memory window and shows ads.
- Some regions are asked for a video-selfie or third-party ID check.
Free: A free account with ads, a short memory window and shorter replies; group chats still work.
Price: from $5.95/mo, or $60/yr billed yearly (checked Sep 2026)
3. Janitor AI — best free replacement
Best for: People who want Character.AI-style scale for free and don't mind a text-only, DIY-feeling interface.
Strengths
- "Unlimited chats with millions of bots" on the free tier, no card, per its own subscription FAQ.
- A public founder statement that the free tier stays free.
- janitor+ Router gives paying users direct access to third-party models without pasting in your own API key.
Weaknesses
- Free-tier memory is about 9,000 tokens by its own interface copy — short next to a long-running relationship.
- No image generation anywhere on the platform; it's a text-chat app only.
- Its own FAQ says the official mobile app disables NSFW content by default, unlike the website.
- When I tried its free tier in October 2026, it repeated the same lines across swipes, and several Trustpilot reviewers say it writes your lines for you and ignores where you steer the chat.
- It leans hard on NSFW, which gets samey quickly.
Free: Unlimited chats with millions of bots, standard models and roughly 9,000 tokens of memory.
Price: from $12.99/mo for janitor+ (checked Sep 2026)
4. CrushOn AI — best for free voice
Best for: Readers who want a big community library with voice replies, and who are ready to subscribe for NSFW characters.
Strengths
- A large, ranked community library with creator pages.
- Voice replies and custom voices, including on the free plan.
- Pinned memories and automatic conversation summaries.
Weaknesses
- Its own in-app copy says free accounts can't open NSFW-tagged characters at all — a paid plan is required for those.
- Free-tier chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity.
- Six plan levels plus an add-on chat package make the real monthly cost hard to predict.
- One Trustpilot reviewer (September 2026) says its filter refuses any mention of self-harm, even as a character's backstory, and restarts the roleplay if you keep going.
Free: Unlimited chat on free models plus 100 message credits a month for stronger ones; free accounts can't open NSFW characters without a subscription.
Price: from $4.90/mo billed yearly ($5.99 month to month) (checked Sep 2026)
5. Chai — best on mobile
Best for: Mobile-first users who want a huge, voiced character library and don't mind shopping for plans inside the app.
Strengths
- Says it was the first consumer AI-character app on the App Store, launching ahead of Character AI and ChatGPT.
- A claimed 1M+ daily active users and every character speaks with a built-in voice.
- Free to download, with chat available before you pay anything.
Weaknesses
- No web app at all — its own site lists the browser version as "Coming Soon," so it's iOS/Android only.
- There's no public pricing page outside the App Store and Play Store listings, so comparing plans means leaving your browser.
- Its storefront lists close to half a dozen purchase tiers plus a separate consumable currency, which makes the real monthly cost hard to pin down from outside the app.
Free: Free to download and chat, with Premium and Ultra subscriptions unlocking more inside the app.
Price: $9.99 for Premium Membership (its App Store listing doesn't say if that recurs), or $13.99/mo for Premium Subscription (checked Sep 2026)
6. Xchar AI — best free trial with no card
Best for: Readers who want a genuinely free trial with no card, then a straightforward credit-based plan.
Strengths
- 150 free credits at signup with no credit card required, per its own pricing page.
- Accepts crypto (Bitcoin, USDT, Ethereum, Tron) alongside cards.
- Memory scales with plan — 6,000, 12,000 or 18,000 tokens — and HD images and video are included on paid tiers.
Weaknesses
- Credits don't roll over; its own FAQ says they reset every month.
- Even free users hit a 30-message daily cap on its strongest language model before falling back to credits.
- Three credit-based paid tiers make heavy use hard to price from the outside.
Free: 150 free credits at signup, no card required; the everyday chat model is unlimited, but the strongest model caps free users at 30 messages a day.
Price: from $7.45/mo billed yearly ($14.95 month to month) (checked Sep 2026)
7. Candy AI — best all-in-one subscription
Best for: People who want one polished subscription covering chat, images and video.
Strengths
- A detailed character builder (ethnicity, hair, eyes, body, personality, voice, hobbies).
- Voice messages, voice calls in beta, and images that can become short video clips.
- Pays by card, crypto, Apple Pay, Google Pay or bank transfer.
Weaknesses
- The free account is 5 messages in total, one custom character and one image.
- 100 tokens a month cover images, video, voice and extra characters combined; heavy use means buying top-ups.
- Video is generated from a still image you already made, not from a fresh description.
- When I paid for a month in October 2026, the plan's credits ran out fast — roughly 5 to 10 minutes of image-heavy use.
Free: 5 messages in total across all characters, one custom character and one image.
Price: from $3.99/mo billed yearly ($13.99 month to month) (checked Sep 2026)
Anime and fantasy characters
If fandom and fantasy roleplay is specifically what you'll miss, it's worth knowing that adults-only doesn't mean realistic-only. AmorLink AI's catalogue includes an anime and fantasy category built the same way as everything else here — characters you can filter by trait, open a profile for, and start chatting with immediately, no separate app or account needed.

Browse the anime category to see the current lineup; new characters get added on a rolling basis, the same as the realistic side of the catalogue.
Memory that lasts
The apps above sell memory in different units — tokens, message counts, plan tiers — because that's how the underlying model works for most of them. AmorLink AI is built around a different idea: the facts worth keeping (your name, your job, the thing you mentioned in passing three weeks ago) are pulled out and stored on their own, separately from the raw conversation log, so they survive a long gap between chats instead of scrolling out of a context window.

It's not unlimited — nothing here is — but it means the difference between session one and session fifty is usually more noticeable than the difference between a 9,000-token free tier and an 18,000-token paid one.
How to start on AmorLink AI
Two ways in, neither requiring a card, and both starting with confirming you're 18 or older. If roleplay is what you'll miss most, my AI roleplay page shows how a scene runs here.
Pick an existing companion. Explore AmorLink AI's catalogue by category, age or trait, open a profile, and press Start chat — she sends the first message.
Or build your own. Create your AI girlfriend from a short description of who she is: her look, her personality, her relationship to you, her voice. Making her and her first portrait are both free, and a free account keeps her and lets you keep talking.
Chatting draws on your free daily messages and never spends Sparks, the credits that pay for photos and video. Every plan is listed on the pricing page if you decide to go further.
Character AI alternatives: common questions
What is the best alternative to Character AI?
It depends what you're leaving for. For scale and a free price, Janitor AI or SpicyChat come closest to Character.AI's size. For a companion who remembers you and has a consistent face across photos, that's what AmorLink AI is built around.
Is there a Character AI without a filter?
Not Character.AI itself — its filter follows from serving under-18 users, and its own Safety Center says so plainly. The apps on this list are separate products built for an adults-only audience, so the trade-off (age verification, in exchange for fewer content limits) is different rather than "the same app without the filter."
Is there a free Character AI alternative?
Yes — Janitor AI and SpicyChat both let you chat for free with no card, and CrushOn AI's ordinary characters are free too. Read the free tier line for each app before you commit to one, since "free" stops meaning the same thing the moment NSFW characters, images or a longer memory enter the picture.
Why is Character AI so filtered?
Because it's open to minors. Character.AI's own Teen Safety page describes a separate, more conservative model and a narrower set of characters for users under 18, with filters removing characters tied to sensitive or mature topics. That's a defensible policy for an all-ages platform, not a bug — it's just not the product for an adult who wants fewer limits.
Is C AI 18+ now?
No. Character.AI still serves teens, just with a different, more restricted experience than adults get — its Teen Safety page describes a separate model and character set for under-18 users, plus a parental-insights tool that reports a teen's activity to a parent who's invited in. It hasn't become an adults-only app.
What are some NSFW Character AI alternatives?
SpicyChat, Janitor AI and CrushOn AI all allow adult roleplay, though CrushOn AI reserves its NSFW-tagged characters for paying users, not free accounts. AmorLink AI is built adults-only from the start, with age attested before your first conversation rather than filtered per character.
Build her in a few minutes. Chatting is free, and there is no card to enter.
