Free AI Girlfriend Apps: What's Actually Free in 2026

"Free" means something different on every app. Here is exactly what seven of them give you before asking for money.

October 2, 2026 · 9 min read

Every AI girlfriend app says some version of “free.” First, the disclosure: we make AmorLink, and it sits at number one below. What “free” buys you is where these apps stop agreeing, so this list exists to say exactly what each one gives you before it asks for money: a message count, a token limit, a locked feature, sometimes a device you have to run it on yourself. Every app here gets its real weaknesses listed, ours included, and every claim about a rival comes from that rival's own website.

We checked all seven apps on September 17, 2026, reading each one's pricing page, help centre and, where the pricing page itself didn't say enough, the specific page it publishes about its free tier. Rival prices carry the month we saw them. AmorLink's price is read live from our own plans, so it is current whenever you load this page. We don't link to the other apps; their names are enough to find them.

What “free” usually means

Four patterns cover almost every app that advertises a free tier, and knowing which one you're looking at saves you from being surprised later.

  • A message cap. The plainest version: a fixed number of messages, then a paywall. Candy AI's free account stops at 5 messages total; Kupid AI's stops at 15. Neither hides the number.
  • A token or context limit. Messages stay unlimited, but how much the AI remembers at once shrinks. This is harder to notice than a message count, because the chat never technically ends — it just starts forgetting the start of the conversation. SpicyChat and Janitor AI both work this way on their free tiers.
  • Locked features, not locked chat. Chat stays open, but something specific costs money: CrushOn AI reserves its NSFW characters for subscribers, and photos are the most common thing gated behind a plan across this whole list.
  • Credits, trials and technical trade-offs. Some free tiers spend a currency (Sparks, tokens, credits) that runs out, or trade convenience for cost: HammerAI's chat is genuinely unlimited for free, provided you run the AI on your own device instead of its servers.

AmorLink is first because it's ours and because we think its free tier is honestly described below, gaps included. It isn't the only free option here, and it doesn't hide what its free tier leaves out. After it, the order is our judgement of how generous each app's free tier actually is once you read the specific number on its own site.

2. Candy AI

Best for: People who want a taste of a polished, all-in-one app before deciding whether five free messages tells them enough.

Strengths

  • A detailed character builder: ethnicity, body, personality, voice and hobbies.
  • Voice messages, plus voice calls in beta.
  • Images of your companion that can be turned into short video clips.
  • Pays by card, crypto, Apple Pay or Google Pay — more checkout options than most apps here.

Weaknesses

  • The free account stops at 5 messages total, one custom character and one image.
  • 100 tokens a month on every paid plan are shared across images, video, voice and extra characters; heavy use means buying top-ups.
  • Its own homepage says "over 100 characters" — not the biggest catalogue on this list.

Free: 5 messages in total across all characters, one custom character and one image.

Price: from $3.99/mo billed yearly ($13.99 month to month) (checked Sep 2026)

3. SpicyChat

Best for: People who want to test a huge community library and group chat before paying anything.

Strengths

  • An enormous community library of characters, filterable by tag.
  • Group chats with 2 to 10 characters, available on the free tier.
  • A Memory Manager on paid tiers lets you pin the details you want kept.

Weaknesses

  • In-chat pictures start at the $19.95/mo tier; hearing replies read aloud needs the $29.95/mo tier.
  • The free tier shows ads and has the smallest memory window, so long scenes lose their early details.
  • Prices rose for new subscribers on September 8, 2026.

Free: A free account with ads, a 4,096-token context window and replies capped at 180 tokens; no in-chat images.

Price: from $5.95/mo, or $60/yr billed yearly (checked Sep 2026)

4. CrushOn AI

Best for: People who want unlimited free text chat and don't mind that NSFW characters specifically need a subscription.

Strengths

  • Unlimited chat on its free models, with no message cap to hit.
  • Voice replies and custom voices, including on the free plan.
  • Pinned memories and automatic summaries, with a bigger memory window on paid plans.

Weaknesses

  • Free accounts can't open NSFW-tagged characters at all — its own in-app message says a subscription plan is required.
  • Free-plan chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity.
  • Six plan levels plus a separate chat package make the real monthly cost hard to predict; its pricing page lists no image generation.

Free: Unlimited chat on free models, plus 100 message credits a month for stronger ones; free accounts can't open NSFW characters without a subscription plan.

Price: from $4.90/mo billed yearly ($5.99 month to month) (checked Sep 2026)

5. Janitor AI

Best for: People who want an enormous free library of community-made characters and don't need pictures.

Strengths

  • "Unlimited chats with millions of bots" on the free tier, no card, per its own subscription FAQ.
  • A public "free stays free" commitment from its founder on its subscription page.
  • janitor+ Router lets subscribers use third-party AI models with transparent per-token pricing, without pasting in an external API key.

Weaknesses

  • The free tier's memory window is about 9,000 tokens by its own interface copy; janitor+ raises that 5x.
  • No image generation anywhere on the platform — it's text chat only.
  • Its own FAQ says the official mobile app disables NSFW content by default, unlike the website.

Free: Unlimited chats with millions of bots on standard chat models, with about a 9,000-token memory window; no images.

Price: janitor+ from $12.99/mo (checked Sep 2026)

6. Kupid AI

Best for: A ready-made girlfriend with photos, short videos and voice notes, for people who don't mind weekly allowances once they upgrade.

Strengths

  • A large ready-made catalogue (realistic and anime), with new companions added weekly.
  • Photos, videos and voice messages on paid plans, with weekly allowances spelled out.
  • Accepts crypto, and offers a one-time lifetime plan.

Weaknesses

  • Free is 15 messages, with no photos, video or voice.
  • Priced by the week under a countdown discount banner, so the real monthly cost takes arithmetic.
  • By its own comparison table, memory covers the last 30 messages on Free and the last 100 on Pro.

Free: 15 messages and one custom companion, remembering the last 30 messages; no photos, video or voice.

Price: from $179/yr on Pro, or $12.99 a week (checked Sep 2026)

7. HammerAI

Best for: People willing to run the AI on their own device for a genuinely unlimited free chat, not just a bigger free allowance.

Strengths

  • Its own pricing page calls the free tier "Unlimited local AI chat, free cloud chat with Smart Lemon Cookie 7B model" — no card, no sign-in required.
  • Local image generation, group chats with multiple AI characters and story writing are core app features, per its published feature list.
  • The free cloud option still states a daily allowance (600 messages a day, 8,192-token context, 2 cloud models) instead of a hard wall after a handful of messages.

Weaknesses

  • The unlimited half needs your own device: a browser with WebGPU support, or a desktop app running Ollama or llama.cpp.
  • Cloud image generation, text-to-speech and the stronger cloud chat models need paid credits, starting at $9/mo.
  • Built by one developer as a "passion project" (its own words) — a far smaller operation than most apps on this list.

Free: Unlimited local AI chat with no card or sign-in, plus a free cloud allowance of 600 messages a day on 2 cloud models; cloud image generation and voice need a paid plan.

Price: from $9/mo for more cloud credits, image generation and voice (checked Sep 2026)

What AmorLink gives you free

Three things, specifically. You get free daily messages with no card on file, so talking to her costs nothing for as long as you stay within that daily allowance. Building your own companion — her looks, personality, relationship to you, voice — is free from the first step to the last. And her first portrait, generated the moment you finish creating her, is free too.

Building her is free from the first screen to the last; the wizard's final step names, personalities and voice cost nothing to set.

What that free tier doesn't include is on our own card above, not hidden in a footnote: her more intimate photo moods and the exclusive companion roster need a paid plan, and a new account's starting Spark balance (the credit that pays for further photos and video after her first portrait) is set by our live pricing, shown on the card rather than typed here so it can't go stale.

When paying is worth it

Honestly: when the free tier's specific limit is the one that bothers you. If you mainly want to talk and the free allowance covers your day, several apps here genuinely don't need your card — AmorLink, CrushOn AI and Janitor AI all let you keep chatting free within their own stated limits, and HammerAI's local chat has no ceiling at all if you're willing to run it yourself. Paying starts to make sense the moment the free tier's specific gap is the thing you actually want: a photo of her, NSFW content on an app that reserves it for subscribers, a memory window long enough that she stops forgetting the start of your conversation, or simply not wanting to install anything to get unlimited chat.

The cheapest way past a given app's free limit varies a lot, from CrushOn AI's roughly five-dollar entry tier to Candy AI's discounted yearly rate to Kupid AI's weekly pricing under a countdown banner. Read the specific price on the card above rather than a homepage's advertised “starting at” figure.

Start free

Two ways in, and neither needs a card. Both start with confirming you're 18 or older.

Pick a companion someone else built. Explore AmorLink's companions by category, age or tags like Romantic and Dominant. Open a profile, press Start chat, and she sends the first message — using your free daily messages, nothing else.

A companion profile: who she is at a glance, a button to start chatting free, and one to generate her picture with Sparks.

Or build your own. Create your AI girlfriend in five short steps. Building her and her first portrait are both free; a free account keeps her and lets you start talking the same way.

Photos and video beyond that first portrait spend Sparks, AmorLink's credit for generated media; daily messages never do. Plans, Spark packs and what a new account starts with are all on the pricing page.

FAQ

Free AI girlfriends: common questions

Is there a completely free AI girlfriend?

Yes, in the sense that several apps here charge nothing to talk every day: AmorLink, CrushOn AI and Janitor AI all offer unlimited or daily free messaging, though CrushOn AI's free accounts can't open its NSFW characters without a subscription, and HammerAI's local chat is free indefinitely if you run it on your own device. "Completely free" gets harder once you want photos, voice or video — those cost money or credits almost everywhere, AmorLink included.

Which AI girlfriend app is free with no limits?

None of them, honestly. Every free tier on this list draws a line somewhere: a message cap (Candy AI, Kupid AI), a token or context limit (SpicyChat, Janitor AI), a locked feature (CrushOn AI's NSFW characters, most apps' photos and voice), or a technical requirement (HammerAI's local chat needs your own device). Anyone claiming truly unlimited free access isn't describing the same free tier you'll actually get.

Do free AI girlfriends send pictures?

Rarely for free. Candy AI's free account includes exactly one image, and SpicyChat, CrushOn AI, Janitor AI and Kupid AI all keep image generation (where they offer it at all) behind a paid plan. AmorLink's free tier covers daily messages and her first portrait when you create her; further photos of her use Sparks, which come with a plan or a top-up.

Is a free AI girlfriend safe?

The realistic risks are about data and money, not the fictional character. Check whether an app states plainly what it stores, whether deleting your account really erases your conversations, and watch credit-based free tiers closely — a "free" plan can still nudge you toward a subscription the moment you want a picture or a longer memory. Choose an adults-only app and don't hand over more payment detail than the price actually requires.

Why do AI girlfriend apps charge?

Running the underlying AI models, especially for images, voice and video, costs money per use, and free tiers are built to cover that cost while still letting you try the product. Some apps subsidize a genuinely generous free tier (Janitor AI's unlimited chat, HammerAI's local models); others cap messages tightly so the free experience doubles as a trial. Reading what a site's own pricing page says a plan includes is more reliable than the marketing copy above it.

Build her in a few minutes. Chatting is free, and there is no card to enter.
