Candy.ai is the category's benchmark. These are the seven alternatives worth comparing it to, and whether Candy AI itself is free.

I work on AmorLink AI, so read what follows the way you'd read any list written by a competitor: skeptically, with Candy.ai's own site open in another tab. Candy.ai earned its reputation honestly — a detailed character builder, images that turn into short video clips, and one of the most polished checkouts in the category. This list is for readers who already know that and want to see what else is out there, whether that's a genuinely free way to try things first, a bigger catalogue, or a feature Candy.ai doesn't advertise. I checked the seven alternatives below, and Candy.ai itself, on September 17, 2026, reading each one's own site and help pages. Rival prices carry the month I saw them; AmorLink AI's price is read live from its own plans. I don't link to the other apps — their names are enough to find them. What Candy.ai actually gets right
Before the alternatives, the case for the app people are comparing everything else to. Candy.ai's own site, checked today, backs up its reputation on three fronts:
- A genuinely detailed character builder. Ethnicity, hair, eyes, body, personality, voice and hobbies are all adjustable, per the live builder copy.
- Chat, images and video in one place. Its own homepage FAQ says plainly that “your companion can engage in voice conversations, generate personalized images, and appear in AI-generated videos” — the same three things this list judges every other app on.
- Payment options most rivals don't match. Card, crypto (BTC, ETH, USDC, Litecoin) and both Apple Pay and Google Pay all work at checkout, per the live site today.
What it doesn't have, by its own count, is the biggest catalogue in the category: the homepage itself says “with over 100 different characters to choose from” — a real number, just not a category-leading one next to some of the catalogues below.
Is Candy AI free?
Only a taste of it, and this section leans on nothing but candy.ai's own pages, dated today. Its help centre article “What can I do as a free user?” caps a free account at 5 messages in total across every character, one custom character and one image — its help centre calls this a free trial rather than an ongoing free tier. Paying unlocks unlimited text messages plus 100 tokens a month, the currency that covers images, video, voice messages, voice calls (still in beta) and building extra characters. Heavier use means buying more tokens on top of the subscription. If your idea of “free” is a companion you can talk to indefinitely without paying, Candy.ai isn't built that way — a few apps further down this list are.

Best for: Adults who want Candy AI's mix of chat, photos and video without a card, plus group scenes Candy AI doesn't advertise.
Strengths

- Tokens — its currency for photos and voice — are, in its own words, "available for purchase only to premium members," so a free account can chat but can't unlock media.
- The headline price is a limited-time offer that roughly doubles on renewal: quoted from its own pricing page, "First Payment $12.99, Recurring Cost: $25.99/month if not canceled."
- No group chat or multiple-companion feature is mentioned anywhere on its pricing or feature pages.

This is the category Candy.ai competes hardest in, and it's worth being specific about how AmorLink AI does it. Build a companion once — from the catalogue or from your own description — and her face carries into every photo and video clip after that, generated from the same studio.
Creating a companion and her first portrait are free. Further images and video spend Sparks, AmorLink AI's credits, and video comes with a choice of quality tier per clip — a quick idea costs less than a keeper.

Like any AI chat service, your messages are still processed on its servers to generate replies — worth reading its privacy policy directly if that's what you're asking about.
Does Candy AI take crypto?
